Copper chloride

Copper chloride (CuCl2) or copper monochloride (CuCl) is a binary chemical substance that is a salt of hydrochloric acid in the form of a green or white powder, practically insoluble in water.

The presence of a greenish tint in crystals indicates that the substance contains impurities of divalent copper (II) chloride.

To produce this substance, copper is exposed to chlorine, or a reaction is carried out in which copper (II) sulfate interacts with sulfuric acid. The industrial method for producing copper chloride involves roasting a mixture of copper sulfide and sodium chloride at sufficiently high temperatures of about 550-600°C. This produces not only copper chloride but also a number of other substances in a gaseous state, including hydrochloric acid, arsenic compounds, and sulfur gases. Additionally, in some production processes, an exchange reaction between barium chloride and copper sulfate is initiated to obtain this substance.

When heated to 993°, the substance decomposes into CuCl, i.e., monochloride, and Cl2. Here are the main characteristics of the substance's solubility in aqueous solutions at the same density of copper chloride:

  • When dissolved in a solution at a temperature of 25 degrees, 77.4 g of copper chloride dissolves in one hundred grams of water;
  • If the solution temperature reaches 100°, the amount of dissolved substance increases to 120 grams.

Copper chloride is widely used as a chemical catalyst, a component of pyrotechnic mixtures, and various mineral dyes. In the form of an ammonia solution, the substance is used to analyze the concentration of flue gases and determine the level of carbon dioxide content in them. Additionally, copper chloride is used as an oxygen carrier in various fields of the chemical industry, for example, in the manufacture of organic dyes.
Despite its low solubility, copper chloride salt can form some crystalline hydrates, and a concentrated solution of this substance can combine with nitrogen oxide. As a result, copper chloride is also widely in demand in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries.
