Nessler's reagent

Nessler's reagent
Nessler's reagent K2HgI4 • KOH or K2HgI4 • NaOH
Description
Nessler's Reagent K2HgI4• KOH or K2HgI4• NaOH Nessler's reagent is a solution in an alkaline medium of potassium tetraiodomercurate dihydrate, having the formula K2[HgI4]*2H2O. It is a pale yellow liquid. Under the influence of light, this chemical reagent begins to decompose, so it must be kept in a tightly sealed container, which should be stored in a cool place. It is important to remember that the substance contains mercury, making it toxic, and if the solution comes into contact with skin or mucous membranes, it causes severe irritation that can lead to general intoxication.  In laboratory conditions, Nessler's reagent is also widely used in studies for the photometric determination and detection of NH3 at 436 nm (el 2.106). The reagent also has the ability to form mercury in metallic form, as a result of which it is widely used in the detection of alcohols and aldehydes, as well as in thin-layer and paper chromatography to identify chemical substances such as hydroxyamino acids. Nessler's reagent must be stored in a cool place in a dark-colored test tube with a tightly closed stopper. The substance should have no color tint. When storing, it is important to remember that the reagent contains mercury, which is dangerous to the human body. Application: in laboratory practice. , Nessler's Reagent TU 6-09-2089-77 Guaranteed shelf life 3 years. Editor: n7nv0w
