Zinc compounds

Zinc (Zincum) can form many binary compounds with non-metals. Some of them have semiconductor properties. Zinc salts do not contain colored anions, and salt solutions have an acidic environment due to hydrolysis. When exposed to ammonia or alkali, Zn salts precipitate and become hydroxide.

Zinc oxide, zinc nitrate, sulfate, zinc sulfate, and other zinc compounds

Zn sulfate (zinc sulfate) - is obtained as a by-product during the production of Zn itself, and has the appearance of a white crystalline powder.

The most important industrial compound of Zn is Zn oxide (ZnO). This chemical reagent is obtained by burning zinc vapors, which are formed during ore smelting, in air. Zn oxide (oxide) is a fine white powder. When heated, the color of the powder may change to yellow. Zinc oxide is mainly used in the production of rubber for car tires. The use of oxide can significantly reduce the vulcanization time of rubber.

Zn hydroxide is obtained by adding alkali to an aqueous solution of zinc oxide. The hydroxide forms as a precipitate. Hydroxide is used for the synthesis of other Zn compounds.

Zn sulfide is obtained by reacting Zn salts in an aqueous solution with soluble sulfides.
