Silver compounds
Silver is an element of the secondary subgroup of the first group of the periodic table. It is classified as a scarce element. It is an excellent conductor of electricity and heat. It is used in printed circuits, contacts, and jewelry. In the form of colloidal solutions, it is used in medicine.
Compounds: silver oxide and silver sulfate
Silver sulfate (sulfate) - small white orthorhombic crystals. They have the property of being partially soluble in water. A solution of silver sulfate is used to absorb chemical CO compounds.
Silver oxide - brown, thermally decomposable. When reacting with water, it forms a weak alkaline solution. When mixing a suspension (silver oxide) with water, it absorbs all carbon dioxide from the air.
Silver nitrate. This chemical reagent is obtained by dissolving Ag in nitric acid and then purifying it. The reagent is used in the film and photographic industries, in the production of mirrors, and in electrolytic processes.
Silver fluoride is produced by the action of hydrofluoric acid on silver carbonate or silver oxide, or by direct reaction of the elements. Silver fluoride is practically insoluble in alcohol but very easily soluble in water.
Silver chlorate is obtained by passing chlorine through an aqueous suspension of silver oxide or by dissolving it in PCl10. Chlorate consists of white crystals that dissolve well in ammonia and water. A mixture of sulfur and silver chlorate explodes upon impact.
Silver bromate is obtained by reacting liquid bromine with an aqueous suspension of silver oxide.
