Aluminum and its properties

In the earth's crust, aluminum is widely represented by various compounds, which are conditionally divided into 2 groups by the number of types:
  • primary aluminum minerals that are formed during the crystallization of magma. These are mainly aluminosilicates – albite, orthoclase, nepheline, and leucite. Less common are andalusite, sillimanite, and kyanite. Corundum – free aluminum oxide, and spinels are relatively rare;
  • secondary aluminum compounds that are formed as a result of weathering. Such compounds are characterized by a high content of aluminum oxide. Among them, the most common are aluminum hydroxylites, aluminum hydroxides and oxyhydroxides (boehmite, gibbsite, and diaspore).
